A BRIEF HISTORY OF MOFO[Mofo/merchants of fine objects] is a t-shirt collective based in Cairns, Australia. Founded mid 2007 by Artists Sam Tupou and Rob Eakin, MOFO provides an alternative outlet for the regions creative talent. Initially based at the Cairns Esplanade markets, Mofo had it's first T-shirt launch in July 2008 and opened it's first retail space in August 2008. Starting out as a monthly 'jam session/b.b.q', Mofo regularly transforms it's back room/print studio into a boutique live music venue, with over 40 local and interstate bands having played the shop's back room to date. At Mofo we dig live music of every genre - experimental, noise, punk, indie, rock, pop, folk, ska, reggae, blues and jazz. In it's first year of operation Mofo used it's side room for monthly art exhibitions, featuring the work of local artists. Whilst Mofo has stripped back it's exhibition program, we continue to support the Cairns Arts community as sponsors of the 'Blunt Edge' at the pink phoenix gallery, 'Riso Soup' at c.1907 Gallery and the On Edge Festival at the Hrvatski Klub Artspace.
